This is a great introduction to the joys of a self-guided West Country walking holiday as it combines a pleasant stroll with experiencing the unspoilt areas of Somerset.

The River Parrett Trail passes through one of Britain's most ecologically sensitive and fragile areas, the Somerset Levels. The needs of agriculture and wildlife are carefully balanced to sustain some of England's richest pasture land. The area is known for its willow growing. Look out for the scultures along the route.

Chedington on self-guided walking holiday on River Parrett Trail in Somerset
Day 1: Arrive at Chedington
To start your Somerset walking holiday you make your own way to Chedington. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided West Country walking holiday.

Leaving the village of Chedington and the source of the River Parrett, the trail passes through the villages of South and North Perrott. The next village Merriott has some fine 17th and 18th century hamstone houses, and this area if famous for its flax growing, which has blue flowers in the spring.
Day 3: Over Stratton to Langport.   15 miles   moderate
Today you walk to Ham Hill, a country park with great views. The River Parrett Trail connects here with The Leyland Trail and The Liberty Trail. The Liberty Trail can be used to connect to the South West Coast Path.

Westonzoyland pumping station on self-guided walking holiday on River Parrett Trail in Somerset Day 4: Langport to Bridgwater.    16 miles     easy
Langport can trace its history back to Roman times. Here the trail intersects with the Macmillan Way West. Plenty of bird life can be seen on the flat and level land where Oath Lock was built to hold back the spring tides. Before reaching Bridgwater the trail passes King Alred's Monument and Westonzoyland pumping station, now a steam museum.

Day 5: Bridgwater to Steart.    10 miles    easy
Bridgwater grew from the river and canal trade and from the brick industry. The river widens now and is a haven for wading birds. Bring your binoculars and stop off at the unique bird hide tower at Combwich. Soon the trail reaches the mouth of the river and the Bristol Channel and the end of this self-guided walking holiday in Somerset.
Day 6: Depart after breakfast
